Oral history interview with Tom Harpool, 1982 March 1.

Interview with Tom Harpool concerning his experiences as President of Harpool's Seed, Inc., and Harpool Fertilizer Company in Denton, Texas. Harpool discusses his family background, farming in Hebron, Texas, his move to Denton in 1928, his father's activities as a cotton, grain, and wool buyer, his employment at the North Texas State Teachers College book bindery, and the purchase of the cotton, wool, and seed business in 1942. He also talks about his education in Hebron and Denton, his experiences at North Texas State Teachers College, his experiences during the Depression in Denton, and Harpool comments on raising livestock in Denton, the operation of the Pedigreed Grain Association, the financing of business, milo development, the creation of Harpool's Seed House in 1948, and the development of his wholesale seed distribution businesss in 1958. Harpool shares his views on the construction of a fertilizer bulk blend plant, the advent of DDT and herbicides, the development of a wholesale farm and garden products business in 1962, the expansion of the wholesale business in Texas and Oklahoma, personnel practices, the use of advertising, government regulations, the typical work day, the factors involved in a successful family business, and his trade association and civic activities.
